Night Shift

Another Runner in the Night

Night Running! (via Squeaky Marmot.)

Coming back from a party late last summer, ever-so-slightly inebriated, I convinced a long-suffering friend that the night was too beautiful to waste on a cab. What's 20 blocks on a night like this, I argued? And so we weaved up Central Park West, and stumbled (literally) into something unexpected: Coming at us, in full Underarmour with matching headphones and water bottle was a midnight jogger. Scratch that: It was 1 A.M.

Friend and I looked at each other, then at our jogger, and then back at one another. Not acceptable, we thought simultaneously, assuming our man as a freakish one-off. But soon we saw another runner, and then another. Since then, I've made a minor study of the thing, and let me fill you in: New York City is home to a whole subculture of fitness buffs who prefer to sweat in the dark. And, you know, maybe it's not so crazy.

Many NYC facilities stay open late, of course, to accommodate the night workout crowd: Chelsea Waterside basketball court is open until 1 A.M.; the Hudson River Park Tennis Courts are open until 12:30 A.M.; and Laughing Lotus has a midnight yoga class. Of course, there is also 24 Hour Fitness, and all the other 24-hour gyms, which  cater to the night shifters. I've been there in the middle of the night, and can attest that there are people. Perhaps the most compelling champion of the nightshift is our Spirit Guide Mike Saes, who says he runs to come down from a night of partying.

Anyway, point is, just FYI: It really is the city that never sleeps....

I wish I had it in me to get up before dawn to run.  In DC in the summer it is the only time that is even remotely not too hot and muggy.

It's probably such a different knmd of run at that hour - probably much more meditative as opposed to energizing....

I love the idea but worry about safety issues :(

I'm all for 24-hour gyms, but being outside by yourself in the middle of the night... is it safe?

I'm not comfortable being outside at night in my city of not even 1 million people, I can't imagine what it's like in New York - I guess if there are a lot of other joggers out that can keep an eye on eachother, that would be different.

I'm putting 1 AM run on my list of things to try this summer. It sounds wonderful -- quiet, cool, and like michlny said, meditative... You guys are right about safety though -- anyone have any thoughts about how to keep safe doing this???

I'm w/ erikka & shaynet on the safety issue. I've always been amazed how guy friends will think nothing of heading into Central Park after dark whereas I've always considered it taboo. I used to live near the crime scene of the infamous Central Park Jogger case and always took it as a grim reminder. Two of my guy friends have both been mugged this year after dark near or in the park, so maybe they're changing their opinions as well.

The only way you can be safe, as far as I can see, is being with a group. I've ridden my bike through the park alone in the dark, which seems a little safer, but this might just be wishful thinking.

the only time i ran late night was when i was visiting a friend back home and we hit his old high school track. however, we had his car's headlights shining on us the whole time and we were in suburbia soo.. a little bit more safe?

ever since moving to the city i have always wanted to run during a crisp night, but im also with the others, i dont think its safe :( safety in numbers! and carry some protection..?!

I see people running at all times of day and night here in DC. I always think it's so crazy, especially when it's a woman running alone after dark. I really wish safety wasn't an issue, because I'd wanna be right out there with them. For now I'll stick to the before sunrise running in a group.
