Good Questions
a month off?!!?!?!
Received a bit of bad news at the doctor today.... looks like that pain in my leg was infact a small tear to a ligament....which means no running, no jogging, no stairmill, no anything intense until i complete 4 weeks of physical therapy.... And just when I was starting to get the hang of living in moderation/challenging myself more each workout..... Great. May also have a nueroma growing in my foot as well....so that could be just dandy too........
Sorry to be such a debbie downer. I'm new to this, and normally wouldn't feel comfortable spreading the sob stories so soon/bogging you all down with my setbacks...but, HELP! Please!! Who has ideas of how i can still release endorphins (needing that now more than ever....), tone my body, and get in shape for the wedding that is approaching?! I'd just like to shrink.....

Isometrics? Meditation? Can you swim just using your upper body?

Swim! It is such a good total body work out and is totally exhausting. You can use a floaty thing that you hold in between your legs so that you only use your arms. Or water aerobics? You could focus on weight lifting and upper body conditioning. And just because you aren't pounding the streets doesn't mean you have to pound the snacks. You can still live a life of moderation... Good luck and don't be dispirited!

The physical therapist should be able to give you some tips.. Hope you heal fast!

can you run in the pool? I did that for a solid 2 years and it kept me in decent shape...swimming with a pull buoy worked for me too. And when truly desperate, I used the machine at the gym where you just pedal your arms in circles. Good luck!

So sorry to hear this. A couple of years ago, just when I was hitting my best workout stride ever, I fell off my bike and broke my wrist, which put me out of commission for a solid 6 weeks (and even after that, I had to be careful).
You don't have to give up on working out completely! I second the others who said talk to your PT and find out what you can safely do. Swimming may be a good choice, and I bet you can do some lifting. Maybe even some reclining bike or rowing. Ask the PT!

i agree with everyone, swimming, ask your PT, also check out Pilates... and PT is exercise... anyway, something similar happened to me.. i was a huge yogi... started yoga in 2001 when i moved to Harlem... I could not do the handstands, or wheel etc, but I really enjoyed yoga, and went 3 or 4 times a week. was a member of YogaWorks, would visit yoga studios, go to yoga workshops, go on yoga retreats.. I knew some of these instructors b4 they became famous and popular.. I lived in Harlem, and worked in the Bronx, and would go to Shriyoga in Tribeca bc of a teacher... I even left YogaWorks and joined Reebok bc my fav yoga instructor (April Martucci) was now teaching there... after each yoga retreat, i needed physical therapy... and then in 2007 i had all these wrist issues, torn ligaments, tendonitis... So when the orthopedist told me that I would have to wear a brace and could not practice yoga for several months, (it ended up being over a year), I cried. I was down and I thought who would make me feel better, so I called Patricia Moreno (b4 she was famous!!) and i was like what am I going to do.. and she gave me the best advice which I am going to give to you, you will find something else that will give you joy..... and she was right... Now I am really happy with my routine (zumba, pilates, spinning, strength training), am stronger than ever bc of the physical therapy.. and working on my core... and you know what, 4 weeks is nothing!!!! ;-) I recently took a Yoga Tune Up workshop with Jill Miller, so that I can feel comfortable when I go back to yoga... My only regret is that i was never able to take a Shiva Rea class, everytime she came to NYC i was injured... the funny thing is now i can finally fit in to the Be Present pants i bought bc of Twee and Sadie...

Oh no! Can you do any sort of weight training? Yoga? But definitely make sure you give yourself enough time to recover, otherwise it will just get worse :(

This completely sucks. My mom is in a wheelchair sometimes and she does this great yoga for older and handicapped people. It's not going to be lots of cardio but it might help keep things limber and toned. I've done it with her before and it's remarkable how close to a regular class it is while being respectful of limitations.

I sympathize. I was told last Wednesday that I couldn't run for a month. The doctor said I could still do yoga so all is not lost, but I need more cardio.
