Getting Psyched for Pushups 101

Ariane Hundt (via brooklynbootcamp)

[Wherein Feralicious Spirit Guide Ariane Hundt, creator of our fave Brooklyn Bridge Bootcamp, offers you her advice for getting off the couch when you really don't want to. ~The Eds.]

You know deep down you have it in you to do the Feralicious Challenge's 1000 pushups (and everything else). But maybe you're feeling lazy (who doesn’t sometimes?) or would rather watch American Idol than get your butt to the gym. Here’s how you can stop the excuses and get your workout mojo up and running again:

You don’t have to love exercise to do it. Even if you don't love how you feel during, you'll love how you feel after. Focus on how much more energy you'll have after the workout than before, and remember that your body will thank you in so many ways for kicking that behind into shape.

Plan for just a little, and do more. If you're overly enthusiastic and plan seven workouts a week but never get around to doing even two, go back to the basics. Plan realistic workouts, such as running twice weekly for 30 minutes, plus 20 pushups and situps per day. Plan to go to the gym for only 20 minutes. Once you’re there and sweaty, you’ll probably want to make it worth your while.

Think positively: Sure, watching TV might be more appealing than working out right now, but which will make you feel better long-term? It's like a bag of chips that tastes good for a second then makes you feel bloated for hours. Think about your goals and how good it feels to achieve them.

try new classes! make a workout date with a friend (or fellow SW'er who goes to the same gym)! commit to a race or other event! keep it fun and varied and it won't be nearly as difficult to get your activity in!

No one EVER regrets working out.....getting there is 99% of the battle.

So - JUST DO IT :o)

am I the only one that does NOT feel more energetic after a workout? makes me feel like I'm doing something wrong...

My hard and fast running rule: If I've planned a run for myself and I don't feel like going, I have to put my clothes on first before I bail. Once I'm dressed, I feel like A Runner and I might as well go for my run. So far I've only bailed while wearing running clothes once.

@gleam - You're not the only one. I was just telling Kaitlyn & Sass tonight that I never get that endorphin rush people talk about it. It's like the green flash in a sunset - I've never experienced it and I don't know what people mean when they talk about it.

gleam --- I'd be curious what your diet is like.  What do you eat prior to and post-workout??  Your diet can have an affect on your energy levels as well.....
