Hypothetical Muscle Math for Poets

- Hulk Hogan
Often, I find my workouts inhibited by how much I think I can press, curl, squat, or what have you. I’ll be on the bench, staring at the stack of plates tucked on either end of the Olympic bar, wondering a.) Why the hell I put so much weight on? b.) Who am I trying to impress? And c.) Who am I kidding.? The truth is, I have no clue just how much I can bench press. I haven’t "maxed out" since high school, over ten years ago.
Well, no more! After some Hulk Hogan sleuthing, I found a little reference to "one rep max," a simple equation used by body builders and athletes to determine what their hypothetical max bench press. As an aside: The average guy benches 135lbs, and Hulk Hogan in his — steroidal? — prime was at 555 lbs. Anyway, here’s the equation:
((Number of Reps / 30) + 1) x Weight Used = One Rep Max
Cool, right? FYI: My hypothetical 1RM is hovering around 250-275 lbs. What's yours?

Mine's around 273. Man, now I wish I had a spotter so I could test this...

what else could I possibly mean? Bowl of Jalapenos? Buttered Jalopies?
@ Matty: I know! I'm super curious. How awesome would it be to have a 1rm of over 300 lbs? Just to even SAY that is maddeningly awesome.

You're not joking. There was a time that I was doing 3x10 reps of 300 lbs + on an incline benchpress plate machine, but who knows how that translates into an actual benchpress. Right now, sans spotter I can do 3 sets of 10, 8 and 8 at around 205 lbs. I could probably do more reps WITH a spotter, but unless/until I get one, I'm afraid of getting stuck at the bottom of a rep and having to yell for help.
Sadly, when it comes to working out with a partner, I seem to be a loner Dottie, a rebel. :oD
