Yoga Regulation Battle Ends, Yogis Win

- Yoga (via lululemon)
You may recall the panic that swept Virginia-area yogis last summer when the state threatened to regulate yoga teacher training. Under the proposed plan, teacher training programs would have required state certification (just like every other vocational training program) and would have had to pay $2,500 to apply for said certification. Yogis didn't like it. Terms like "overly burdensome" got thrown around a lot. And this week, Virginia's Governor signed a bill exempting yoga teacher training programs from state certification. So maybe cheer! Or maybe worry that there's no state oversight of yoga teachers?

Speaking as someone who lives in Virginia, I am glad there is not an extra financial burden on yoga instructors. It seems to me that state oversight of yoga teachers is unnecessary if your yoga teacher is registered with the National Yoga Alliance. But what do I know? Do other states require a certification and charge $2,500? Would the state or, should I say, Commonwealth of Virginia know a good yoga instructor? Would it just be determined by ability to pay the fee?

It is a complete over sight to think that Yoga Regulation is no longer happening, because it is.
Louisiana, Texas, Missouri, Washington State are actively embedded in legislative troubles. The victories that Virginia and New York had, at best bring larger questions for yogis to answer.
For if the Yoga Alliance Mark Davis plot had been successful, then every yoga practitioner nationwide would have been required to become YA Certified, without any true benefit to yoga.
The widespread "dumbing down" of yoga education began with Yoga Alliance and now is begging for yoga teachers to become responsible for themselves.
Either we all take responsibility for yoga education or we put the fate of all of yoga into the hands of a greedy non-profit that has corporate alignments and no real legal power.
