Twitter's Fitness Must Follows and Fail Whales

I'm still getting the hang of this Twitter thing. It's a lot like flossing to me: I know I should do it, but it's kind of awkward at first and makes my gums bleed.  After a while though, I can see why it's important.

There's lots of info to be had in 140 character or less, and from a fitness perspective, there are actually quite a few sources for legit info, though of course there are also plenty of tweeting personal trainers who are yawn worthy. But now that I've been flossing for a while, I've got a pretty good list of who's worth following and who's worth skipping right over. My picks:

  • Bob Harper: Likes to give daily fitness challenges and words of support. But, he's like the Facts of Life: you take the good, you take the bad.  This man plugs Biggest Loser like it's his job...which it is, but it's still on the annoying side.
  • Jillian Michaels: Tweets a lot of random personal stuff with very little words of fitness motivation, but she does answer reader questions pretty regularly on Twitter, so she’s a source for information if you have specific questions.
  • Jackie Warner: About a month ago I would have said take a pass on her Twitter. All she seemed to talk about was casting her new show, but lately her Tweets have picked up with useful fitness tips daily.  I'm digging her now.
  • Skinny in the City: Daily Skinnyscopes. I’m a sucker for horoscopes and these ones are all fitness related.
  • Living in Thin: The Twitter for Jessica Smith, she actually links to lots of really interesting and motivational articles regarding health and fitness.
  • Harley Pasternak: Does nothing but plug the 5-Factor diet and his clients. Kind of boring, but if you’re on his 5-Factor diet, he will answer your questions.
  • David Kirsch: He doesn't give a ton of fitness advice but if you live in New York City he's good for reference since he links to lots of good NYC health food and fitness finds.

Obviously this is just a drop in the bucket in the alternative universe that is Twitter. If you're following any must Tweets, let me know, I'm always up for being schooled in the Twitterverse.

Comments

This is primarily what I use Twitter for; other than the biggie newsfeeds (NY Times, CNN, etc.), I follow everything health and fitness related -- I recommend adding all the fitness magazines, as they'll tweet tips and exercises straight from their pages and retweet reader tweets.

Also sometimes it pays to follow healthy food/living companies you like, because sometimes if you tweet about how much you like their products you can score free samples!

Love Bob's little daily challenge tweets... he's like a little burst of sunshine with all his encouragement.

In the spirit of FollowFriday, I'll add these more strength-oriented feeds:

  • Sandy Sommer
  • Jackie, a personal trainer based in Vancouver with some cool ideas for non-boring no-machine cardio (great for Feralicious!)
  • Scott Bird runs a health and fitness forum called Straight To The Bar and hosts weekly "Twitterchats" about different strength and nutrition topics
  • Dave Tate, CEO of Elite Fitness Systems, muses on life and covers strength sports and competitions
  • Tim Hull links to videos of unique exercises and is concerned about your joint health

These guys are my go-to people for training in my small corner of the Twitterspace.
