School Lunch

Obama's School Lunch Stimulus Plan

Obama Lunch (via Concord Monitor)

President Obama has proposed a $1 billion budget increase for the Child Nutrition Act, which provides funds for school lunches. If his proposal passes, it could mean lunchrooms around America replacing frozen tater gems and canned spinach with whole grains and fresh greens. The bill would also give the Department of Agriculture the authority to review the ancient standards on food sold in schools, (think vending machines).  Imagine: No more Funions and Mountain Dew. The existing Child Nutrition Act expires September 30th, so, this month, supporters of better food in schools are turning their advocacy up a notch. Slow Food USA's National Eat-In takes place this Labor Day. If you can't make the event, introduce your favorite kid to kale.

I'm planning to end FoS with a bang by going to the eat-in potluck here in SF (in Civic Center, should make for an interesting mix of both food and people). I'm sure there's one going on in NY. Seems the perfect way to end the Feats in general and Alt Healthy Eating in particular!
