Blue M&Ms Will Save Your Spine

- Blue Rat (Via Jeff McNeill.)
… and all along we thought red M&Ms were the ones that did wonders for the body. A macabre new study shows that the dye from blue M&Ms—called Brilliant Blue G—can actually help heal damaged spines. Scientists dropped weights on labratory rats to break their spines. They then administered an infusion of the Brilliant Blue to some, and left others Blue free. Seems the ones who received the Blue recovered much quicker than the ones who didn’t. Six weeks later the rat treatment group walked with a limp, while the control group never walk again. How crazy is that? (No mention whether the happy limpers had also turned blue....) Apparently, the Brilliant Blue "Coomassie" Dye acts to reduce swelling that could otherwise kill vital neurons. God bless those poor rats, but good to know should you happen to fall from a ladder this afternoon. Start pounding the blue ones.

there's a book my department's coming out with that focuses on a DNA signaling pathway... named after Sonic the Hedgehog. Scientists are weird.
